Oseoporosis
Bone is created and torn down using two different teams of workers. OsteoBLASTS build up and repair bone. OsteoCLASTS tear down bone. The parathyroid gland seems to be the primary manager of which team is working faster.
In Hyper-Parathyroidism (HIGH), blood calcium levels rise, corresponding to a loss of bone calcium and increase in OsteoCLAST activity. Hypo-Parathyroidism (LOW) causes a shift in the reverse order, more calcium in the bone and less in the blood.
Sounds like we might just remove that pesky parathyroid gland…until we discover that calcium in the blood is of higher priority than calcium in the bone. Blood calcium facilitates muscle contraction, including the pumping of blood and the digesting of food. So we need (like all things) balance and harmony!
So what would cause the parathyroid to pull calcium from the bone? That is the ultimate WHY in the case of osteoporosis.
There are many irritators to the Parathyroid gland, such as food, pollen, dust, etc. allergies (Histamine), heavy metal exposure (not the music) such as mercury, lead and aluminum, and, ironically, excessive Calcium supplementation.
Drug therapy includes hormone replacement, which we have found increases dramatically cancer and Alzheimers, and possibly heart disease. I would rather have the bone loss if I had to choose! Also, there are drugs that block the activity of OsteoCLASTS, which is the bone tear down team. Personally, I would want to know why they are working too quickly, because if it is lead or allergies, that has a greater health consequence than just bone loss.
There is also the consideration of balance and harmony in the diet. Calcium and magnesium need to be in optimal ratios. Stress and sugar problems accelerate the body’s use of magnesium. Vitamin D and essential fats need to be balanced, which is disrupted by fear of the Sun and consumption of trans fats such as margarine or anything hydrogenated.
I rarely recommend calcium these days, as it is fortified in so many foods and so many folks are taking mega doses in supplements already. I see a much greater need for magnesium with our stressful lives and junk food diets.
