Wellness

Wellness is a hot topic…it is “the next trillion dollar industry” according to one famous economist. But what is wellness? Is it taking vitamins and exercising? Is it eating whole foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables? Is it getting a regular massage, adjustment, or other body therapy? Is it meditating, relaxing, and resting well? Well, yes…it may include all of these. I think the most important question is how do you know that what you are doing is right for you? Wait and see if you get a chronic disease or not? That would be one option, I guess.

Science based wellness involves testing and measuring. It involves comprehensive lab testing to evaluate even slight slip ups of all functions: sugar metabolism, stress effects, inflammation and micronutrient sufficiency are some of the measurements we can take.

Sure, you will get a cholesterol screen at your medical office to see if you fall in the range to try a statin or other drug. But what causes cholesterol to be too high, and what is too high? Some doctors will now put you on cholesterol meds for a cholesterol of 215. I would consider that perfect, as long as your HDLs are high enough (HIGH CHOLESTEROL). The Framingham study has proven that eggs and butter do not cause high cholesterol. It has also proven that low cholesterol does not prevent heart attack. One analysis of data showed that 80% of the individuals that had a heart attack had “normal” low cholesterol. That didn’t make the paper because Lipitor had a full page ad in your local and national paper at the time. Cholesterol will generally rise as a result of sugar metabolism problems not fat. Have you heard of Syndrome X? It is by definition a sugar metabolism problem that results in high cholesterol, low HDLs, and high blood pressure. So, fix the problem, not the effect. Cholesterol will also be affected by thyroid problems and liver problems. All these are checked on the OPTICHEM Blood and Urine Analysis.

Wellness involves a thorough evaluation of your posture and nervous system. An abnormal posture, which is anything off center…a high shoulder, twisted pelvis, or head tilt…and is a direct result of a problem with your cerebellum or other brain and nerve tissues. The cerebellum stimulates your brain, which is why walking regularly cuts your risk of developing Alzheimers by half. The brain needs food and stimulation. Movement stimulates the brain, as does music, thought, vision, smell, touch and taste. A posture that is “off center” is a clue to problematic neural or brain stimulation. An adjustment, massage, properly applied music, aromatherapy, or visual stimulation can change your posture and your health, now and in the future.

Wellness requires movement and rest and then more movement and rest. You will never build the brain and wellness of your dreams without an organized exercise program. You will also never build the wellness of your dreams if you don’t rest and recuperate properly. This can be evaluated by muscle testing. Not the “muscle testing” you see at the neighborhood vitamin store. But a neurological assessment of muscle function, testing all muscles individually and as a group. I often offer the example of Billy Sims, a NFL running back for the Detroit Lions in the 70s. He was running free one game and his knee exploded, blew out, and his career was over without being touched. The only thing that could cause that would be an imbalanced torque in his knee flexors and extensors. One group was set either too high or too low in tone. He ran fast and produced massive torque in that knee, but it would have been fine, just like the other one, if his muscles were balanced.

The key to wellness is measuring and adjusting until it is right, not symptom free, but optimally balanced, as required by definite criteria. The fact is that inflammation, sugar metabolism issues, stress hormones, poor posture, and muscle imbalance result in something, and that something is bad. It will create the worst possible genetic outcome for you individually. On the other hand, balancing these hormones, nutrients, posture and muscles will virtually eliminate the risk of future poor health or chronic disease. It will create the best possible genetic outcome for you individually…that is wellness.
